Plant-for-the-Planet launches global consultation to ensure Children's Voices are heard at COP 30 in Brazil

Hello,

Tutzing, Germany, August 26, 2025. The Plant-for-the-Planet Foundation today announced the launch of a new global initiative to ensure children's perspectives are included in the Global Ethical Stocktake (GES), a landmark initiative of the COP 30 Presidency. By hosting self-organized dialogues for children and youth, Plant-for-the-Planet will provide a critical platform for the voices of those who will live to see the full consequences of the climate crisis.

Plant-for-the-Planet Puts Children's Voices at the Center of Climate Justice

Inspired by the Global Stocktake from the Paris Agreement, the GES is designed to move beyond a technical analysis of climate progress. To do so, it focuses on the moral and ethical dilemmas of the climate crisis – a core principle that aligns perfectly with Plant-for-the-Planet's work since 2007. While the GES explicitly calls for the voices of youth, activists, and Indigenous peoples, it does not specifically mention children.

Plant-for-the-Planet together with other organizations working with children and youth have adapted the GES proposal to fill this gap. The adaptation is grounded in the belief that children and youth should not just be seen as victims of the climate crisis but can become powerful agents of change.

The self-organized dialogues will be conducted with children in a number of countries across the Global North and South, including Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Germany, India, Mexico, Nepal, Nigeria and Uganda. The first will take place in Santiago, Chile, on August 30.

Children's Voices at COP 30: "A moral necessity"

Their insights are highly relevant as they bring a unique perspective rooted in intergenerational justice, lived experience, and an unburdened moral clarity. This approach is in line with the recent advisory opinion rendered by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which confirmed climate action as a fundamental human rights issue.

The insights and moral clarity gathered from these dialogues will be compiled and submitted to the COP 30 Presidency. A delegation of 30 children from Belém, Brazil – the host city of COP 30 – who have been trained as Climate Justice Ambassadors by Plant-for-the-Planet will represent their peers at COP 30, ensuring unique voices of children from around the globe will directly inform global leaders at COP 30.

"We believe that climate action is fundamentally a matter of justice and human rights", says Luciano Frontelle, Executive Director at Plant-for-the-Planet Brazil. "By including the voices of children, we are transforming a technical debate into a profound, forward-looking commitment to the future they will inherit. This is not a symbolic gesture – it's a moral necessity."
